What happened to the crew of the US Navy blimp L-8?

I have always had an interest in mysteries and unexplained disappearances of both people, planes and ships.

One disappearance which I have only just discovered, and which is truly puzzling, is the disappearance of the crew of the US Navy blimp L-8 off the coast of San Francisco in August 1942:

What would have caused the crew to take their life jackets and abandon the blimp so quickly and suddenly?

Could it have been a case of “friendly fire”? The West Coast of the US was still worried about a Japanese invasion – could a trigger-happy Air Force pilot mistake the L-8 as a Japanese aircraft?

  1. Hi Graham,

I always thought it was some kind of accident; they both “fell overboard” and we’re killed by the fall over the sea somewhere off the coast. Mechanical or electrical fault was initially to blame.

    Shane.
